Yesterday, Nissan took the racing world by surprise when it unveiled a race-ready 2013 Nissan Altima Supercar. This isn’t your regular Altima as it will be taking on distinguished racers in the Australia V8 Supercars Championship next season. Nissan has not competed in the series since 1992, though it holds many titles from when it did race the series in the 1980s and 1990s.
This beast of an Altima is powered by a 5.0-liter V8, currently providing around 320 horsepower, though Nissan is beefing it up to get above 600 horsepower when race day arrives. It is the first contestant to have a car with independent rear suspension, which is something yet unseen in this series.
“This is the proudest day in the relatively short history of our team, as well as one of the most significant days in recent times for the sport of V8 Supercars,” Tom Kelly, Nissan’s team racing director, told media.
